In 2003, veterinarian Thijs Flahou came in contact with small camelids (alpaca, llama, vicuña, guanaco) for the first time. Thanks to his thesis (‘Fertility and management of llama’s and alpaca’s in the Benelux: a summary.’ he started working with a few alpaca breeders. This was the first step of many years of studying about medicine and reproduction of alpacas.
Thijs worked in Nigeria, Bonaire (Dutch Antilles), England and France. After more overseas continued education, and working experience in the field of camelid medicine and reproduction, he started his practice for alpacas in 2007. This practice has recently been named ‘Alpa-Vet’.
Thijs is providing veterinary services for many Belgian and Dutch alpaca breeders. He’s daily working with 40 alpacas on the alpaca farm of his partner, Hanne Van De Winkel.
